After months of patiently awaiting the start of the Bell City Chase National Championship the 14 participants who persevered and won their regional event, as well as the 2 lucky ladies from Halifax who were crowned “Team Extra”, were finally told where they were going as they boarded a seaplane in the Vancouver Harbour.
Equipped with nothing but an empty backpack and the clothes on their back – no money, no cell phone, and no food or water! – teams landed in the Inner Harbour of beautiful Victoria, BC just as the sun came out. Knowing only the first challenge, and very little about what was to follow, the teams began their adventure.
Over the next two days, these 16 participants found out first hand all of the funny and sometimes twisted challenges that the race organizers had been planning for months …
** This story probably couldn't do them justice so the details of the challenges will be saved for the broadcast that will be aired across the country on Global TV in late November.
After nearly 20 hours of racing, and as the sun began to set over Victoria's Inner Harbour, 3 teams emerged in the distance. The teams from Calgary, Ottawa, and Halifax battled hard over the last few km's of the course and crossed the finish line at the Fairmont Empress Hotel within 43 seconds of each other. When the smoke cleared Bill Jarvis and Tory Meyer of Team Calgary were crowned the first ever Bell City Chase National Champions!!! To add to the excitement of the finish, and in a show of tremendous camaraderie and sportsmanship, Team Toronto and Team Vancouver crossed the finish line together a mere 6 minutes after the winners.
When all was said and done the eight teams who participated in the 2004 Bell City Chase National Championship all crossed the finish line within an hour and a half of each other.
